Life Readiness Program

As the prevalence of the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum has increased, the demand for a service to transition through developmental age groups has become imperative. The Life Readiness Program is viewed as a natural progression from BHRS services which have established the foundation to acquire specific skills, learn basic communication and navigation of the real world. It is designed to bridge the gap between early intervention services for children and services offered for the adult population. Adolescents are perhaps the most difficult group to counsel. Neither child nor adult, teens are in a kind of developmental limbo. They are too old for time out, yet too young to shoulder grown-up responsibility.

Group therapy is seen as an ideal therapy to use with adolescents, as teenagers are used to being in groups. In school they learn in groups, most sports are played in groups, and they hang out with groups of friends. Therefore, group therapy is an ideal choice of therapy because it is a setting that is safe and familiar.

The focus of the life readiness program is to prepare individuals for day to day life activities while promoting independent living skill building. Individuals work on developing self determination, perfecting self-care, transitions to adulthood, learning vocational skills, competing in employment opportunities and learning how to live effectively in the least restrictive environment while working toward successful outcomes. The program is divided into three age groups: the transition from pre-teen to teen age group, transition to young adult group and transition to being an adult group.
